Types of Fungal Skin Infections

Fungal infections, as the name suggests, are caused by certain types of fungi. Many types of fungi reside in our skin and most are usually harmless. An infection can occur if the fungus undergoes a change, if the individual has had an extended dose of antibiotics, or the immune system is weakened. Fungal infections target our skin because some fungi thrive on keratin, a protein found abundantly in the skin, hair, and nails. These infections are superficial, found only on the top layer of the skin, and can sometimes be contagious. They are caused by two types of fungi: dermatophytes and yeast.

Types of Fungal Skin Infections

Dermatophyte Infections

Athlete's Foot
Also known as tinea pedis, it affects the foot, and in some cases, the toenails. Men are more affected by this infection than women. The skin between the toes becomes swollen, red, and scaly and can result in intense itching and burning. Athlete's foot is contagious and the most common places where you can get contaminated are swimming pools, saunas, and public shower rooms. If not treated properly, it can even result in painful blisters. To prevent this infection, always wear flip-flops around swimming areas. Avoid walking barefoot. Change into a fresh, dry pair of socks if your shoes and socks get wet. Most fungi live in moist areas of the skin. So make sure you dry the skin between your toes thoroughly. To treat athlete's foot, keep your feet and toes clean and dry. Antifungal medications can treat athlete's foot effectively.

Jock Itch
Referred to as tinea cruris, the fungus usually affects the groin area, inner thighs, genitals, and buttocks. Symptoms include redness in the groin area, itching and peeling of the skin, and the affected individual experiences raised, ring-shaped rashes over the skin. Jock itch occurs mainly in wet climate and summers. If you suffer from jock itch, wash and clean the affected area with a soft towel, and change your clothes, especially underwear, as frequently as possible, especially if you get wet or happen to sweat a lot. The fungus which causes jock itch flourishes in warm and wet areas on the skin. Affected individuals can use antifungal creams and sprays to get rid of the problem.

Ringworm of the Body
This infection can affect any part of the body, but it's the stomach and limbs that usually get affected. Also referred to as tinea corporis, it is not caused by a worm as the name may suggest, but by fungi. It results in reddish, flat or elevated patches on the skin which can spread easily, usually from the center. Domestic animals are the most common source of infection. Topical over-the-counter antifungal creams and sprays can help to heal the problem.

Ringworm of the Scalp
This fungal infection affects the scalp and is also called tinea capitis. It is highly contagious and can spread easily through infected scalps, especially among children. The symptoms include intense itching of the skin and inflammation of the scalp, sometimes leading to hair loss. Tinea capitis is more commonly seen in people of African and Central American origin. This infection can sometimes be mistaken for severe dandruff. Oral antifungal medications are usually used to treat this condition.

Ringworm of the Nails
Fungal nail infections are referred to as tinea unguium. Nails become brittle and develop crumbling edges. Loose, malformed nails can also result in this type of infection. Toenails are more susceptible to this fungal infection, but this condition can affect fingernails too. Topical over-the-counter creams are not effective to treat tinea unguium. Doctors usually prescribe oral tablets. This condition does not heal quickly, with toenails taking a much longer time to heal than fingernails.

Yeast Infections

Pityriasis Versicolor
Also termed as tinea versicolor, this infection causes dark patches on very fair skin, and light patches on dark skin. It mostly affects children and young adults. Hot, humid climate is favorable for the yeast to grow and this infection can cause excessive itching and sweating. Topical antifungal ointments are the best way to deal with this infection. Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes to prevent this infection.

Intertrigo
This infection occurs mainly in skin folds, mainly where skin tends to remain moist. Candida albicans is the yeast which causes intertrigo. Red, shiny rashes with scaly edges appear on the folds of the skin, which can spread to the surrounding skin folds. Sometimes you may see bumpy patches on the skin with a pus-like discharge. As with most other fungal infections, topical antifungal ointments and powders can get rid of this ailment. Keep yourself clean and dry, especially in areas with skin folds. Do not wear tight, ill-fitting clothes and change your clothes often if you are prone to intense sweating.

Thrush
A very common infection, this is also caused by candida albicans. The most common areas affected are the mouth, inside of the cheeks, and tongue, and women may also suffer from vaginal thrush. Oral thrush mainly affects children and results in soft, white, patchy sores, which turn red and can even bleed if rubbed. It usually disappears on its own, or you may be asked to rinse your mouth with a medicated, antifungal mouthwash by your doctor. Vaginal thrush symptoms include a yellowish discharge, and inflammation and itching of the affected area. Antifungal suppositories or lotions are usually prescribed in such cases. People with diabetes and high sugar levels are prone to thrush. The excess sugar found in the saliva is ideal for the yeast to grow. The best way to prevent thrush is to decrease your blood sugar level.

Fungal infections are not a serious skin condition, and most go away with the use of antifungal sprays and creams. But people who have a weak immune system, a history of fungal infections, are obese, suffer from diabetes, and have taken or are taking antibiotics or steroids are more susceptible to fungal infections. Even people who sweat a lot and live in places with damp, hot weather can fall prey to such infections. Moist skin favors the growth of yeast and fungi, so be sure to wear dry, loose-fitting clothes, and not remain in wet clothes for extended duration of time.

Maintain personal hygiene, do not wear tight shoes, disinfect used items, and do not share personal belongings like hair brushes, pillows or hats. Often, these infections look like normal skin rashes. If you are not sure whether the rash you have developed is a fungal infection, do not take any over-the-counter medication without first consulting your health care provider. He can make the right diagnosis and prescribe the necessary medicine. So stay clean, follow a health regime, and steer clear of fungal infections.

Homeopathic Remedies for ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common childhood disorders. This neurological disorder is characterized by symptoms such as inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness. Children suffering from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder have a very low attention span and get distracted very easily. If not diagnosed in childhood, this condition might persist through adolescence and adulthood. People suffering from ADHD have trouble focusing or finishing the tasks that they undertake. Besides genetic factors, the causes of ADHD include chemical imbalances in the brain, problems associated with nerve pathways or exposure to lead or polychlorinated biphenyl. Since this neurological disorder can affect one's ability to learn and exercise self-control, it might hamper one's chances of doing well in personal and professional life. It is, therefore, important that this condition is diagnosed and treated at an early stage. Besides the conventional ADHD medication that might help in managing the symptoms, alternative treatment options such as herbal medicine or homeopathy may also help in the treatment of this disorder. In this article, we would discuss homeopathic remedies for ADHD.

Alternative Treatments for ADHD

Since ADHD is a neurological disorder, ADHD treatment options include the use of stimulant drugs and behavioral modification techniques. Since excessive use of stimulant drugs can have certain side effects, the need for safer alternative treatment options is increasingly being felt. This explains the inclination towards alternative treatment for ADHD. Some of the popular herbal remedies for ADHD includes the use of gingko biloba, lobelia, chamomile, green oats, valerian, bacoba and pine extract. If taken under the guidance of a herbalist, these may help in correcting the chemical imbalances in the brain. Homeopathic treatment can also help in alleviating the behavioral problems exhibited by children and adults suffering from ADHD. Let's find out more about homeopathic medicines for this childhood disorder.

Homeopathy for ADHD

Certain homeopathic medicines that have been found to be beneficial in the treatment of ADHD include Stramonium, Cina and Hyoscyamus. Here's some information about the medicines that may help in alleviating certain symptoms of ADHD.

Hyoscyamus
Homeopathic treatment of ADHD is symptomatic in nature. The medicines are prescribed according to the symptoms exhibited by the patient. The use of hyoscyamus is recommended if the symptoms exhibited by the patient include violent outbursts, impulsiveness, inability to think clearly, excessive talking, fear of being chased by enemies or animals, fear of dark and display of inappropriate gestures. A shortened attention span and inability to focus are common ADHD symptoms in children and adults. Hyoscyamus niger is one such medicine that can also be used for improving the sufferer's ability to focus. It also works well for children displaying manic behavior.

Stramonium
This is one of the most effective homeopathic medication for anxiety in children. It is extremely useful for treating hyperactivity. It might be of great help for children who speak incoherently or talk very fast. It can also provide relief to those who are fearful of darkness. It might also be prescribed if the fear of being abandoned seems to be bothering the sufferer. This medicine might be recommended if the patient displays excessive aggression in the form of kicking, biting, hitting or use of threatening language.

Cina
Cina is generally prescribed for treating fidgeting disorder in children. Cina also helps in improving the attention span. It is generally recommended for children who are very restless at night. It helps the child sleep peacefully throughout the night. It might be recommended for children who don't obey and exhibit difficult behavior.

Though the aforementioned homeopathic remedies are believed to be quite effective in alleviating some of the symptoms of ADHD, there are many other medicines that can help in providing relief from other symptoms. Besides taking these medicines, following an ADHD diet will also help in alleviating the symptoms of this disorder.

Recipes for Post Gastric Bypass Meals

Obesity and the resultant diseases is one of the leading causes for death. Bariatric or weight-loss surgery, especially gastric bypass surgery, is a common method to deal with morbid obesity. During the surgical procedure, the surgeon reduces the functional portion of the stomach to a small pouch, and connects it directly to the jejunum of the small intestine. Thus, the remaining portion of the stomach, and the duodenum of the small intestine are bypassed. This reduces the intake of food, and leads to lowered absorption of calories and nutrients.

However, for successful weight loss and prevention of any complications, it is essential to switch to a healthy lifestyle and follow the recommended dietary guidelines. The meal must be small yet nutritious, and overeating must be strictly avoided.

Post-surgery Diet
For the first few days post surgery, the doctor or the medical center-associated dietitian plans the meals to be consumed by the patient. Initially, the patient is given only clear liquids including water, fruit juices, clear broths, etc. Once the patient is able to tolerate the clear liquids without any complications, the patient can switch to pureed foods. This must continue for a week or two, depending on the patient's condition. Following this stage, the patient can consume soft solids like soft fruits, cooked vegetables, etc. Once this stage is cleared, the patient can be given solid foods with approval from the concerned doctor. This usually happens about 10-12 weeks after the surgery.

Following a diet plan strictly is essential for such individuals. Their meals must include fish, lean meat from chicken and turkey, eggs, and low-fat dairy products. Red meat, carbonated beverages, and foods containing high amounts of sugars, fiber and fats must be avoided. At the same time, it is essential to include vitamin and mineral-enriched foods. Individuals who have undergone gastric bypass surgery often suffer from deficiency of iron, calcium, vitamin B12, folate, and vitamin C.

However, selection of the right food items to form a diet routine for six pack abs, and selection of the top exercises to build six pack abs is important. Here are the important tips that focus on getting six pack abs.

Six Pack Abs Diet Tips
  • The most important diet tip to remember while following a diet routine for six pack abs, is to have frequent and small meals. Have 5-6 small meals in one day. This will increase your metabolism and balance the energy, and provide important nutrients to your body, and help in faster weight loss.
  • Never skip your breakfast, as people who skip their breakfast tend to be heavier than those who regularly have their breakfast. Have a nutritious and large breakfast. A large breakfast is required by the body as the body metabolism is high in the morning, and nutritious breakfast will provide important nutrients that you will need to start your day.
  • Include cereal in your six pack diet plan. A yogurt smoothie made with berries and whey, an omelet or turkey sandwich with brown bread for breakfast can also aid you in your endeavor.
  • To lose belly fat, avoid carbonated drinks, alcohol and other junk and fried foods. Alcohol and junk foods tend to bloat your stomach. Also, carbonated drinks make your stomach bloat and cause water retention.
  • Proteins are must for a six pack abs diet and fitness. Excellent sources of protein are eggs, chicken, tuna, cottage cheese, salmon, etc. Casein protein containing food items are an excellent way to provide your body a steady stream of amino acids when on an abs diet. You can find this protein in milk and other dairy food products.
  • Stick to Mediterranean-style fats, while on a six pack abs diet. Fats like olive oil, almonds, avocados and fish are excellent for health as they lower the cholesterol levels and help protect the joints.
  • Drink lots and lots of water while aiming at six pack abs. Water will keep your body hydrated, and remove toxins from your body. Drink around 2.5 to 3 liters of water throughout the day.

  • To stick to the diet, eat one meal once a week of your choice, which can be pizza, burger or any other food preparation of your liking.
Six Pack Abs Workout Plan
  • The most used exercise for building abs are the abdominal crunches. This exercise is effective and, when performed regularly, can give you good results. However, there are variations of this exercise, that can help you achieve a good six pack abs shape faster.

  • One of the best abdominal exercise for building six pack abs is the bicycle crunch. For this exercise instead of lifting your body straight, you need to lift the legs in the air, and with your hands behind the head make right elbow go near the left knee and vice versa.
  • Another effective six pack exercise is the bent elbow plant, which works for the whole trunk region. For this exercise you need to lie on the belly, and lift yourself on the toes and forearms.
Following a good diet and best exercises to achieve six pack is important, but remember that the body needs rest too. So, apart from focusing on the flat stomach abs diet and workout plan, get adequate amount of sleep to remain healthy.

Stomach Ulcer Symptoms in Children

It is a misunderstanding that ulcer is an adult-disease. An open sore, or lesion, found on the skin or mucous membrane inside the body is referred to as an ulcer. An ulcer is an open painful wound. An ulcer in the lining of the stomach or duodenum, where hydrochloric acid and pepsin are present, is called peptic ulcer. When the peptic ulcer develops in the stomach, it is particularly known as stomach ulcer or gastric ulcer. Though it is usually adults who develop stomach ulcers, children can also suffer from it. The symptoms of stomach ulcer, initially may indicate some other digestive problems.

Stomach Ulcer in Children

Causes
  • Acid and Pepsin: Weakened stomach cannot defend itself against the powerful digestive fluids, hydrochloric acid and pepsin, and this leads to the formation of ulcer.
  • Stress: Studies show that children with ulcers often are under emotional stress. Excessive stress increases ulcer pain. Physical stress is also responsible for developing stomach ulcers.
  • Caffeine: Caffeine triggers acid secretion in the stomach, which in turn can aggravate the pain of an existing ulcer. But, excessive secretion of stomach acid cannot be attributed solely to caffeine.
  • Non-steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs): NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen sodium make the stomach vulnerable to the harmful effects of acid and pepsin. These drugs are present in many over-the-counter medications used to treat fever, headaches, and minor health problems and pains.
  • Smoking: Some small children and teenagers smoke, with or without the permission of their parents. Along with increasing the chances of getting an ulcer, smoking slows down the healing process of existing ulcers, and thus smoking can contribute to ulcer recurrence.
  • H. Pylori: Researches show that 80% of gastric ulcers and 90 % of duodenal ulcers develop as a result of infection with a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). H. pylori weakens the stomach's protective mucus which is then easily damaged due to the effects of acid and pepsin. H. pylori also forces the stomach lining to produce more acid. Therefore H. pylori is considered as the primary cause of stomach ulcers in children.
Symptoms
It is true that ulcers do not always exhibit symptoms. One of the leading stomach ulcer symptoms is gnawing or burning pain in the abdomen between the breastbone and the navel. The child may often complain about the pain between meals or early in the morning. Abdominal pain may last from a few minutes to a few hours. Dyspepsia indicates a group of peptic ulcer symptoms which include belching, bloating, nausea, regurgitation, a sensation of fullness, abdominal pain, blood in vomit or bowel movements and discomfort. Here is a list of common symptoms of stomach ulcers in children.
  • Stomach ache with a burning sensation
  • Belching
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Vomiting
  • Blood in vomit or stools
  • Discomfort after eating
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling tired, weakness
Peptic ulcer in children is not a common stomach problem. Parents need to consult their child's physician for a correct diagnosis if they notice any of the above symptoms. Without prompt treatment, children with ulcers may suffer from serious complications like bleeding, hole in the stomach wall leading to serious health problems, narrowing or closing of the intestinal opening which may prevent the food from leaving the stomach, etc. Treatment protocols may be different for different types of ulcers but correct diagnosis of ulcer disease and H. pylori is essential before starting the treatment. For instance, treatment for an NSAID-induced ulcer will be quite different from the treatment for a child diagnosed with an ulcer caused by the bacterium, H. pylori.

In the past, physicians used to recommend a bland diet for ulcers and used to advise that people with ulcers should avoid spicy, fatty, or acidic foods. But studies have shown that a bland diet cannot effectively treat or avoid ulcers. In fact, no particular diet is helpful for most ulcer patients. Therefore, parents should be extra careful about their child's eating as well as other habits. Stomach ulcer symptoms in children should never be neglected. If parents have any doubts, they should consult their physicians. If it is noticed that certain foods cause irritation, parents should discuss the problem with the child's physician. The most important thing is that parents should carefully watch the eating habits of their children. It is their responsibility to create awareness about healthy eating and healthy lifestyle.

How to Overcome Anxiety and Depression

Anxiety, stress, and depression are a common phenomenon in today's fast-paced urban life. The dynamism of life is such, that it allows only a fraction of a second to adapt the constant changes. Within a blink of an eye, we are changing jobs, forming new relationships, taking up new tasks and finishing the old ones. The maddening race to be the best, sometimes pushes us over the edge, only to land us in a pool of overwhelming anxiety and depression. People may experience, anxiety attacks while sleeping or obsessing about a stressful issue.

What is Anxiety and Depression Disorder?
We have all felt small pangs of anxiety, before a presentation or any important event. The heart begins to pound fast and we get butterflies in our stomach. This is our body's natural reaction to fright. When this feeling becomes constant and begins to interfere with our day-to-day activities, relationships and professional work, the anxiety is then termed as anxiety disorder. Once a person suffers from anxiety disorder, he/she refrains from social activities and enters a state of inactivity.

Ways To Beat Depression and Anxiety

Accept the Trouble
Anxiety in adults is generally due to over working, both, professionally and domestically. Thus, it's time for you to accept the problem before solving it. Write down all the sad feelings, terrible thoughts and horrifying mood swings. Now that you have them in front of you, analyze, what is the cause of each and every feeling. Think of experiences that have made you feel so, this may require a little digging up, but remember it's for the best.

Be Open
Tell your spouse or your family members about what you are going through. Let them know about your trouble and the reasons for it. If you are facing some relationship problem with them that is bothering you, overcome it by talking things out. Allow others to help you to see the difference in your relationships.

Positive Affirmations
Anxiety stems from worrying too much about preposterous situations. To overcome anxiety naturally, think positive about what is going to happen. Your present situation, is a result of your past thoughts. Thus, let positive thoughts occupy your mind, so that it yields positive returns. The simple way of doing this, is to construct every sentence you speak positively.

Divert Attention
We have all indulged in small time lies and big fat ones too. Play pretense with yourself and participate in activities that you like. Watch movies, go out with friends, cook, play some sports, clean up your house or travel somewhere. This will help you to get your mind of the fact that you are trying to overcome anxiety, depression.

Meditate
Meditation is the best stress reliever. The art of watching your breath is a lifesaver for many. With various meditation techniques finding your inner peace is possible!

If you look at anxiety and depression carefully, they are both states of your mind. The more you think about them, the deeper you will fall in the dark abyss. Shun all the negative thoughts away. Prioritizing your needs will work wonders in helping you lead life in a more positive manner.

ADHD and Bedwetting

ADHD or the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is one that is most often diagnosed in young children, and may continue into adulthood. Characterized by symptoms such as lack of the ability to stay focused at any one task for a long time period or a general restlessness, ADHD causes trouble to little ones in controlling their emotions as well as understanding and responding to their physical needs. Bedwetting or enuresis has often been related with ADHD. A child may be diagnosed as suffering from enuresis when she/he does so beyond the age of 5 and displays repeated occurrences of the same. It has been found that boys display such a habit more often than girls.

The Link Between ADHD and Bedwetting in Children

While researchers have not been able to find a solid link between the two conditions, studies have shown that the occurrence of the two together is greater than bedwetting on its own. This study, published in the Southern Medical Journal in 1997, showed that by the age of 6, children with ADHD were more likely to suffer from night-time enuresis three times more than those who did not have ADHD. This study however does not prove the fact that bedwetting may be a direct result of ADHD.

One of the prominent reasons for enuresis to occur as a result of ADHD, as pointed out by experts, is that children who suffer from ADHD have lesser control over their bodily signals as they are easily distracted. On the psychological level, children with ADHD are likely to feel 'different' from other kids who do not have this condition, and may find it difficult to fit in. As such, the stress or the pressure caused by such situations is likely to result in bedwetting. Finally, it is possible that either condition may just occur due to a genetic predisposition to the same.

In another approach to this debate, it has been found that bedwetting can often serve as a symptom of lack of intellectual growth and a condition such as ADHD. However, this cannot be held completely true as enuresis may also be caused by hormonal problems, stress, and urinary infections. Unless more symptoms of ADHD are noticed along with bedwetting, the fact that a child may be suffering from ADHD cannot be clearly established.

Reducing Instances of Bedwetting in Children with ADHD

Whenever such instances have been reported to physicians or psychiatrists, the two conditions, i.e. bedwetting and ADHD are treated separately. This is because there is no established link between the two. Measures are taken to involve parents in the treatment process, and some of the following methods are adopted to treat the condition.
  • Some theories suggest that it may be a particular food that is consumed, that causes both symptoms of ADHD as well as bedwetting. As such, doctors prescribe a specific diet that reduces hyperactivity and allows children to focus on their needs.
  • Establishing the habit of relieving the child at a set time every day before going to bed can help reduce the occurrence of such a problem. Further, if the parent is aware of the time this instance occurs, it is a good idea to wake the child up before the time and take her/him to the bathroom.
  • It is important to evaluate all possible causes of bedwetting in the child. It could be an outcome of stress, or a bladder infection. If it is a psychological trigger, then treatment methods such as behavior modification techniques for ADHD may be utilized to reduce it.
  • The instances of bedwetting wreak havoc on a child's self-esteem. It can have her/him feel demoralized and left out. As such, be a supportive parent who understands the problem, rather than yelling at your child for not being able to control this situation.
In some cases, children may outgrow this problem by the time they reach puberty. However, this does not eradicate the necessity of appropriate treatment. Again, experts may work to treat both the conditions separately. Along with this treatment, the child who suffers from ADHD and has repeated occurrences of bedwetting should get a lot of support from her/his parents and family. Patience, medical treatment, and methods to improve her/his self-esteem will go a long way in treating this condition.

Bleeding Ulcer Risks

The gastrointestinal tract consists of all the organs that are responsible for the input and output of the food that we eat, the energy that we produce and the waste material that we excrete out of our body. So, the gastrointestinal tract begins from our mouth from which we eat, followed by the esophagus, the stomach, the intestines (both large and small) and the rectum. Bleeding ulcers usually tend to occur in these organs, each with a different terminology based on the organ they have started to occur on. For example, bleeding ulcers on the esophagus are known as esophageal ulcers, the ulcers on the stomach are known as gastric ulcers and the ulcers on the small intestine are known as duodenal ulcers. These ulcers emerge as peptic ulcers, which seem like open sores inside the GI tract and can convert into bleeding ulcers if left untreated or if exposed to certain elements that can prove to be dangerous under this condition. You will be surprised to know that almost 95 million people in the United States suffer from some or the other form of digestive problem. As far as bleeding ulcers are concerned, they usually tend to go unnoticed as most of the time, they may become asymptomatic. If you too have been suffering from digestive problems, with or without any symptoms of bleeding peptic ulcers, then you need to be aware of the risks and triggering factors of bleeding ulcers.

Factors that Can Increase the Risk of Bleeding Ulcers

Not all peptic ulcers can lead to bleeding. But then, if you have peptic ulcers (or even if you don't), there are certain risk factors that can actually put you under more risk of developing bleeding ulcers. The point to be noted is that when it comes to bleeding ulcers, they are difficult to identify as you cannot see any external bleeding in a visible manner. A bleeding ulcer in your body causes internal bleeding which may go unnoticed for a long time! The most common symptoms would include bloody stool, blood vomit, severe pain in the abdomen, weight loss and weakness. Have a look at the factors that can put you under the risk zone.

Physical or Emotional Stress
Stress is the reason for almost all the possible health issues one suffers from... including bleeding ulcers! Though it is not the sole reason behind their occurrence, it is definitely a very significant triggering factor for the same. There can be different type of stress that you might undergo. It could be a physical injury or it can be an emotional factor which can cause the ulcers to bleed, or even trigger the formation of ulcers.

Using Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs
NSAIDs are one of the main reason for bleeding ulcers in humans. The continuous use of these drugs actually causes severe irritation in the gastrointestinal tract, especially the stomach and can cause bleeding ulcers. If you are on these drugs for a long time, you need to speak to your doctor about the same and try going for some alternate therapy so that you can exclude yourself out of the 'red zone' for developing bleeding ulcers.

Helicobacter Pylori Infection
Another most common reason for bleeding ulcer is the infection caused by the Helicobacter Pylori, or the H. pylori bacterium. Now the point to be noted here is that this bacterium is usually present in the stomach lining, however, it is not always that this causes ulcers in people, but yes, it does increase the risk factor. There are many antibiotics that can fight against this bacterium and can cure the ulcers.

Smoking and Alcohol
You are also under the risk of developing bleeding peptic ulcers if you are a regular consumer of alcohol and smoking. Apart from the damage that smoking and alcohol as it is do on the human body and mind, another risk that they put you under is the transmission of the H.pylori bacterium, which can be spread by sharing same cigarettes, utensils, and kissing. Alcohol also irritates the stomach lining by increasing the amount of acid which can cause the ulcer to bleed or trigger its formation.

Eating Too Spicy Food
Eating a lot of heavy and spicy food is also known to develop ulcers in the gastrointestinal tract as it irritates the lining due to excessive spice. So if you have been dealing with digestive problems, then it is a must to avoid eating heavy and spicy meals.

Make sure that you live a healthy and active lifestyle which doesn't involve smoking, drinking, eating spicy food and taking a lot of stress. Also make sure that you don't consume a lot of NSAIDs as well and get in touch with your healthcare specialist in case of any health concern related to the same as untreated bleeding ulcers can lead to serious complications which may prove to be fatal if immediate hospitalization and blood transfusion is not done. So, take care and have a safe tomorrow.

Test Anxiety Symptoms

A little anxiety often goes a long way in motivating us to perform better. It gives us the much-needed push to go beyond our capacity and prove ourselves in anything we do. For instance, before a simple test, all of us are prone to getting nervous before we go out and give any kind of performance. However, for some, this anxiety goes to a whole new level, where it reaches such an extent that it affects performance. This is what is known as test anxiety, that is recognizable by some very specific symptoms. Young children are most affected by this condition; but why does this happen? Nervousness is common, but why do children get excessively anxious before a test or an exam? This may be due to the following reasons:
  • The Pressure to Perform by Parents: If you find yourself to be one of those parents who is constantly pressurizing their children to do well by comparing them with others, it is likely that your child may take this negatively and develop test anxiety.
  • The Fear of Failure: With the pressure to perform also comes the expectation of parents which children fear they may let down. This fear reaches such an extent that it wrecks their thinking and affects their performance in a test.
  • The Inability to Prepare: Procrastination or the inability to prepare well before an exam can be another reason why your child may be breaking into cold sweats before a test. This usually happens because of the fear of the test.
These are some of the prime reasons why children are likely to experience test anxiety. Moreover, in some cases, a bad experience during a test or poor performance on a test in the past for which they were severely reprimanded can result in a negative association to tests, and show up by way of some symptoms that have been discussed below.

What are the Symptoms of Test Anxiety?

Test anxiety shows itself by way of physical and psychological symptoms. These have been enlisted here:
  • Unusual Aches and Pains: Some children are known to develop pains and aches in different parts of the body just before a test. For instance, a stomach ache or a pain in the arm or leg is usually spoken of by a student. However, if a medical check is done on such students, no physical symptom or cause for the pain is evident. This shows that the fear in them is so deep that they unconsciously manifest a reason not to give the test.
  • Panic Attacks: Severe test anxiety in some cases may result in panic attacks. This in turn may exhibit symptoms such as palpitations, heavy sweating, clammy hands, shortness of breath, an increase in heartbeat, and even nausea and vomiting.
  • Changes in Appetite: Children may also experience changes in appetite due to test anxiety. While some may eat a lot due to the nervousness, others may not be able to stand the sight of food, and may end up vomiting if forced to eat.
  • Insomnia: Children who fear tests so much are likely to suffer from insomnia a few days before the test. They may be unable to sleep the nights leading to the day of the test, and this results in confusion and loss of concentration because of the physical and mental fatigue.
  • Loss of Focus: Test anxiety reaches an extent where it begins to affect the clarity of thought needed to perform well in a test. The presence of mind, focus, and concentration are all lost because of the fear that has overcome the student.
  • Feelings of Desolation: Children who find themselves in such situations tend to feel desolate and helpless. They find themselves trapped in a web that they can't seem to get out of. This further results in anger and guilt because of the inability to perform.
  • Low Self-Image: The anger, guilt, and helplessness causes a child to feel inefficient and incompetent. This in turn affects her/his self image, which can be both a symptom and an effect of test anxiety.
As you can see, one symptom leads to another and then becomes a vicious circle that continues until a thorough effort is made to break it. This requires not only personal effort, but continual support from parents and peers. Since someone who has test anxiety has a low self-image, the support is needed to encourage a positive perception of the self and develop faith in the fact that they are as good as anyone else. Speaking to teachers in school and charting out an organized long-term study plan together can also go a long way in overcoming test anxiety. Finally, parents need to make an effort to stop pressurizing their children into performing, as well as comparing them with the neighbor's children. Being good in studies is not the only key to success. Focus on your child and her/his talent. Some children are not cut out for straight A's in every subject. Their interests lie elsewhere. Believe in them and allow them the freedom to be who they want to be. These stressful situations will never arise then.

What Does 'Butterflies in the Stomach' Mean

Whenever you see your crush walking down the path and striding towards you, there is that familiar feeling of butterflies in the stomach...Whenever you are about to give a speech in front of the entire class, there they go again, the butterflies. And when the cue to have you on stage for the next song is announced, who else accompanies you up there but the butterflies in the stomach?

What's your age? 15? 39? 52? 78?...No matter what it is, haven't you all had that butterflies flooding your stomach feeling at one time or the other? I'm sure you have. Have you ever thought about why you get butterflies in your stomach? Or have you simply accepted it as another natural phenomenon of our body? How boring you are. Aren't you even a little bit curious about what happens? Cause yeah, there aren't actually butterflies in there. Then why is this term, 'Butterflies in the stomach' used so frequently? Guess what, I found out about it and so will you if you read this article. Ready? Here we go...

Meaning
This is a term that is synonymous with the fluttering or tickling (hence, butterflies) feelings of nervous excitement or anxiety. It is usually caused when you are about to be in a situation where you are likely to be judged. That is why when you are up on stage, performing in front of so many people, standing up there, where people can see you and will be evaluating and examining you, you are overtaken by the feeling of butterflies in your stomach or being nervous.

Similarly, when you see a crush pass by, your senses are suddenly heightened and you want them to see you at your best - so the nervous feeling takes over.

Causes
Physiologically speaking, this feeling is the body's way of dealing with danger. It has got to do with the body's fight or flight response to certain situations. Some say that it is caused by the release of a type of adrenaline called epinephrine, which results in the pulling away of blood from the stomach area and sending it to the muscles. This results in a temporary shut down of the stomach. Some people believe that it leads to a better performance because you are forced to be alert. Similarly, the nervous excitement and feeling of constant butterflies in stomach, that one experiences in love, is also brought about by the mood altering endorphins that are released into the body.

Cures
When the butterflies in your stomach get serious, it is time to make them flutter away! (Bad joke, I know.) But getting to the point - How? You just adopt a few anxiety cures. Simple.
  • Breathe. Clear everything else from your mind and simply breathe deeply. Instant relief.
  • Learn to relax by doing meditation or yoga or taking nature walks. It helps to calm you down.
  • Have a go-to places which provide relaxation. It could be anything from the smell of a particular soap or a favorite song. Keep it handy when you have an important event that you know will cause nervousness and tension.
  • Have some herbs like chamomile, lemon balm or some herbal tea to keep the fear at bay and help you calm down.
Here's a great number by the Olsen twins on butterflies in your stomach. Quite fitting, I would say...

Butterflies in Your Stomach
When you got butterflies in your stomach
And a desert in your mouth
Your bod is signifying
It wants a way out
Cause you're scared that you might mess up
Afraid that you might goof
So when you're feeling nervous,
Here is what you got to do

Chorus
Just breath a little deeper
Sip a little water
Know that you'll be great
Everybody's gonna love ya
Especially if you smile
When you step out on that stage
Ohh yeah! Ohh yeah! Ohh yeah! Ohh yeah!

Wow! I can't help it. I still have butterflies in my stomach
You know, it could be worse
Yeah, you could have a caterpillar up your nose
Ok, ok, ok
What did a dancer do when she hurt her foot?
She called a toe-truck

Now there's something that you must know
Since you've done this all before
Every fear is gonna leave you
When you step on that dance floor
Cause you're doing what you love most
And practiced for four years
And if you're dancing from your heart,
Then you will leave them all in tears, so...(Chorus)

Pretty interesting concept, isn't it? So then, technically speaking, there is nothing wrong with your health when you get that fluttery feeling in the stomach. It's just the body's way of telling you that there could be a possibility of danger, of which you should be aware. If you ask me, it's a useful little concept that helps you be well-prepared for what is to follow sufficiently well.

Why is Diet Important if You have Gout?

Gout is a condition characterized by inflammation of the joints, usually the big toe. It is a form of arthritis and hence, its symptoms are similar to those of arthritis. Gout is caused due to improper uric acid metabolism in the body. People suffering from gout experience sudden and severe attacks of gout which are marked by inflammation, redness and tenderness in joints and at the base of the big toe. Following a diet can significantly help in treatment and prevention of gout. Let us take a look at it in detail.

Diet for Gout

Before taking a look at the foods safe to consume, and those to be avoided, if suffering from gout, let us first find out the relation between one's diet and gout. As mentioned above, gout is caused due to abnormal metabolism of uric acid. The condition occurs when uric acid builds up in the body. This can happen either due to excess formation of uric acid in the body or due to malfunctioning of the kidneys. Uric acid is formed by the breaking down of purines in the body. Hence, excess formation of uric acid is caused when high amount of foods containing purines are consumed by the person. The excess uric acid in the body gets converted into crystallized form and gets accumulated around the joints, leading to gout. Foods obtained from animal sources are high in purines and hence, people consuming these foods are at a higher risk of gout. Secondly, consuming excess amounts of alcohol is also one of the reasons for causing gout in people. People suffering from obesity, or having high levels of fat, or cholesterol, in their body are also susceptible to gout. Therefore, we see that gout is caused due to the food one eats and hence, following a proper diet is essential to treat and prevent gout. Let us take a look at the foods to be avoided and foods safe to consume in the gout diet.

Foods Safe to Consume
  • Fruits, green vegetables, nuts, seeds
  • Pasta, flax seeds, cereals, cornflakes, white bread
  • Low fat dairy products
  • Cherries and strawberries
  • Coffee, tea, fruit juices, soft drinks
These foods are extremely safe to eat when suffering from gout as they do not affect the uric acid level in the body. In fact, certain foods like cherries and strawberries are believed to lower the increased uric acid level in the body and hence, people must consume moderate amounts of cherries every day. On the other hand, certain foods like asparagus, mushrooms, cauliflower, spinach, legumes, freshwater fish, whole wheat products and eggs should be consumed in moderate or very little amounts. Now let us know what are the foods to avoid in the diet for gout.

Foods to Avoid
  • Organ meats, red meat, game meat, meat extract
  • Sardines, herring, clams, mackerel, crab, scallops, mussels, cod
  • Gravies, salad dressing, consomme
  • Whole milk, cream
  • Yeast, cakes, pastries, donuts
  • Alcohol
As obesity and having high levels of cholesterol are one of the risk factors for gout, it is essential to have a diet low in cholesterol and fat. Maintaining a proper weight and having healthy foods can help prevent gout. Therefore, one should avoid eating foods with high amount of fat; and also avoid meat and alcohol in the diet to prevent gout.

Following a proper gout diet can help in treatment and prevention of this condition. Based on this food list, you can look for recipes on the Internet and follow the diet regularly, to get rid of the inflammation and discomfort. Take care!

Meditation Techniques for Anxiety

Anxiety, nervousness, stress, etc., are all byproducts of living life in the fast lane. In case you happen to be someone who's fascinated by numbers and statistics, here's one for you - more than sixty percent of the world's population is affected by anxiety in some way or the other. Anxiety is something that must be dealt with at an early stage or else, it can manifest into something really serious and potentially dangerous such as panic attacks, generalized anxiety disorder, etc. So how to overcome anxiety? Well, meditation is a very popular and widely practiced method of overcoming anxiety. This is because it is not only extremely easy to implement, but also very effective in terms of producing desired results. On that note, here are some meditation techniques for anxiety cure.

Breathing Exercises and Techniques
Certain breathing exercises and Pranayama techniques work wonders in relieving anxiety and calming all anxiety symptoms. The best and simplest breathing exercise that you can perform is 'deep breathing'. Although it is an oft-repeated word, sadly, it happens to be one of the least understood of concepts. When told to practice deep breathing, what most people do, is try to puff up their chests with as much oxygen as they can. That is not the right way to go about it. Deep breathing involves making use of your abdomen, NOT your chest. When you breathe in deeply, you should literally feel your abdomen swelling up with air, and then going back to its original position upon exhaling. Practice this for a mere 5 minutes whenever you feel anxious or stressed out. The best thing about it is that you can practice this exercise anywhere and at any time of the day. Just close your eyes, block your mind from all outer distractions and concentrate on your breathing. Feel the purity of oxygen entering your body as you inhale, and all the anxiousness and negativity leaving your body in the form of carbon dioxide as you exhale.

Additionally, here are some Pranayama techniques that you could make use of:
  • Anulom Vilom
  • Kapalbhati
  • Bhasrika Pranayama
  • Sheetali Pranayama
  • Nadi Shodhan
  • Bhramari Pranayama
Yoga
Yoga offers tremendous benefits in both, relieving anxiety as well as relaxing the mind and body. Here are a few yoga exercises and yoga poses which, when performed in the right manner, help in experiencing total relaxation.
  • Surya Namaskara or sun salutation exercise
  • Vajrasana or thunder pose
  • Sarvangasana or shoulder stand
  • Ushtrasana or camel pose
  • Matsyasana or fish pose
  • Halasana or plow pose
  • Yoga Nidra or yogic sleep
Mind Control and Visualization
Being able to control and quiet the mind is another meditation technique for controlling and lessening anxiety. Sit in a cool, silent and peaceful place. Close your eyes and gradually clear your mind of all thoughts (especially the negative ones). Try and feel the resulting stillness within your mind and body. Visualize yourself as being in a state of serenity. Many people also make use of prayers and other forms of spirituality to achieve this. These mind control and visualization techniques can be very powerful in relieving you of stress and anxiety.

In addition to the aforementioned, here are some other ways of dealing with anxiety:
  • Aromatherapy
  • Tai Chi
  • Herbal Remedies
  • Massage Therapy
  • Reiki
  • Swimming
  • Prescription Medicines (to be used strictly under medical supervision only)
This was a short overview of effective meditation techniques that you can take into consideration in order to achieve relief quickly. These techniques are extremely beneficial for people of all age, as they frame a healthy lifestyle. Take care!

Foods to Avoid while on Gout Diet

Gout is one of the painful forms of arthritis which leads to inflammation in joints, especially in the big toe of the foot. This condition develops due to abnormal metabolism of uric acid in the body. The excess uric acid gets accumulated in the joints which leads to pain and inflammation. The exact cause of gout is unknown, however, there are several factors that are believed to trigger off this condition; the most common being improper diet that is rich in meat and consumption of alcohol.

Foods to Avoid in Gout Diet

As mentioned above, gout is caused due to deposition of the excess uric acid in the body. This occurs as the kidneys either due to excess formation of uric acid in the body or due to malfunctioning of the kidneys. This uric acid gets stored in crystallized forms in the joints resulting in gout. The excess uric acid is formed when the body breaks down purines. Purines are found in varying levels in a variety of foodstuff and it is essential to avoid foods high in purines in order to treat and prevent gout. All kinds of meat, especially red meat and organ meat, contain high amounts of purines and hence, should be avoided. Secondly, foods having higher fat content can also contribute in increasing the uric acid in the body and trigger off gout, therefore, they should be avoided.
  • Beef
  • Bacon
  • Chicken
  • Goose
  • Pork
  • Pepperoni
  • Salami
  • Sausage
  • Scallops
  • Turkey
  • Veal
  • Herring
  • Sardines
  • Cod
  • Crab
  • Clams
  • Mackerel
  • Salmon
  • Trout
  • Haddock
  • Scallops
  • Mussels
  • Cakes
  • Donuts
  • Pastries
  • Whole milk
  • Cream
  • Gravies
  • Salad dressing
  • Consomm
  • Yeast
  • Alcohol
All foods made from white flour are also harmful for a person suffering from gout. It is advisable to go for whole wheat or whole grain products and brown rice. Secondly, foods like hotdogs, sweet breads, meatloaf, etc., should be excluded from the diet. One should note that obesity is one of the common gout triggers and hence, it is essential to avoid foods that lead to weight or fat gain in the body.

Foods Safe to Eat

There are several foods that are safe to eat as they do not trigger off gout. The following is a list of foods to eat when suffering from gout.
  • Vegetables
  • Fruits
  • Cereals
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Low fat dairy products
  • Vitamin C foods
  • Nuts
  • Seeds
  • Flax seeds
  • Tuna
These are the foods that can be eaten safely and included in your anti gout diet. On a happier note, chocolates and sweet fruits like strawberries and raspberries can also be eaten as they do not worsen gout. On the other hand, all the low-fat dairy products, tofu, etc. can be safely consumed. It is essential to follow the diet for quick treatment and recovery of the condition. It is also recommended to consult the doctor before making any major dietary changes.

Lastly, note that excluding high purine containing foods, alcohol and maintaining your weight under control can help in quick treatment of gout. Take care!

Peptic Ulcer Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

The Peptic Ulcer Disease (ulcus pepticum), occurs in the form of a depression in any area of the digestive tract of the stomach or the duodenum (first part of the small intestine) or the esophageal tract. 'Peptic' is derived from 'pepsin' which is a protein-breaking stomach enzyme. Peptic ulcer is caused, when the digestive juices of these organs which are acidic in nature erode the digestive tract, creating a depression in the tract. A peptic ulcer occurring in the stomach is known as a 'gastric ulcer' or stomach ulcer, the one occurring in the duodenum is known as a 'duodenal ulcer', while the one associated with the esophagus is known as a 'esophageal ulcer'.

Symptoms
The most common symptoms of peptic ulcer, also known as dyspepsia, are severe burning pain and discomfort in the abdominal area, nausea, vomiting food or vomiting blood, belching, etc. In case of a gastric ulcer, the pain is usually experienced shortly after meals while in case of duodenal ulcer, the pain is experienced between meals or when on an empty stomach. The pain usually subsides with food intake or intake of antacids. Other symptoms include a considerable loss in appetite resulting in weight loss, weakness and fatigue, bloating of the abdomen, heartburn, indigestion, constipation, black or tarry stools accompanied by bleeding, etc. These symptoms vary from person to person in their intensity and frequency. So it is always advisable to visit a doctor for the precise diagnosis of the disease. Different methods of diagnosis like gastroscopy, endoscopy, blood and stool tests are conducted and the patients family and medical history is also taken into consideration.

Causes

Helicobacter pylori: Most ulcers are caused due to an infection by the H.pylori (Helicobacter pylori) bacteria found in the lining of the stomach which are capable of destroying the duodenum and stomach tissues when combined with the acidic digestive juices.

Other causes: An ulcer can occur when compounds like prostaglandins, which provide protection against ulceration are rendered useless by acid and pepsin. They also damage the mucus lining, the cells on the surface of the stomach and bicarbonates that help regulate the digestive juices.

Another major cause is the consumption of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin, naproxen, ibuprofen, etc. These drugs hamper the ability of the stomach and the duodenum to shield themselves from acid and pepsin which leads to ulceration. Other causes include, excessive consumption of substances like caffeine, nicotine and alcohol. Nicotine increases the concentration of acids in the stomach whereas alcohol can harm the mucus lining of the stomach. Consumption of spicy food is also considered to be a cause of peptic ulceration and it also aggravates the symptoms.

Treatment
Treatment for this disease is administered with a combination of medications and lifestyle changes. In case of an advanced stage of the disease, a surgery is adopted as the treatment method. Medications, for the treatment of this disease, is prescribed as a combination of antibiotics and a proton pump inhibitor, which suppresses the acids and at times antacids are also administered. Antacids like pantoprazole and esomeprazole, etc. are prescribed. These drugs eliminate the bacterial infection and the healing process takes place gradually. Patients are advised to bring about lifestyle changes like incorporating a balanced diet instead of unhealthy, spicy and acidic foods and to quit smoking and alcohol consumption.

Peptic ulcer disease can be cured completely and relapses can be avoided by taking the adequate measures under the advise of a doctor and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

Disciplining a Child with ADHD

ADHD in children is linked to hyperactivity, problems focusing on daily chores, getting easily distracted, and difficulty in organizing their tasks. The child may seem overly active and do things without giving them much thought, or even forget everyday chores. They may face problems while doing simple things like finishing their homework, getting along with friends and family, and making new friends.

Caring for a child diagnosed with ADHD poses a great challenge, and it is important that the parents and caregivers practice disciplinary techniques that are specific to the disorder. A comprehensive treatment plan which combines the use of drugs and following a set of behavioral practices is an effective treatment in fighting ADHD.

Disciplinary Techniques for Children with ADHD

Getting a child with ADHD to concentrate on a particular chore can be very difficult. All kids, and especially those with ADHD, prefer a set pattern which involves repetition of everyday chores they can get habituated to. Children benefit hugely from such set routines which enables them to perform better. Not following a routine will make the child battle more with his problems. As an example, make a list of chores that you would want your child to complete on a daily basis. These can be grouped into things to be done before leaving for school, things to be finished after returning home, and those that must be completed before bedtime. See to it that your child follows this. To begin with, make a list which the child can easily accomplish. He is going to need a lot of help and time to start following a fixed routine if he is not used to it. Keep your calm if the child cannot keep up in the initial stages. To help them, stick brightly colored post-its in every room which serve as reminders. Positively instructing your child to obey you goes a long way in disciplining him. Instead of "Do not shout" use "I would like it if you talk softly". Or "Can you please help me in cleaning up your room?" rather than "Clean up your room" will propel him to do the task, rather than ignoring it.

You will need to follow-up with constant reminders to get things done. Even after constant reminders if the child does not finish the set chore, mildly set forth the rule that non-compliance will result in penalty (like time-outs). Do not be harsh on the child, but make sure that you do not let unwanted behavior be ignored. Once the child understands that doing things his way is of little concern to parents, he will do exactly as he pleases. Talk to him and explain what exactly needs to be done. At the same time, if he successfully finishes the tasks assigned, heap praise on him and duly reward him. This is very important and will motivate him to perform better next time. Asking children to finish a task instills in them a sense of responsibility and helps build their confidence. Make a chart which records his daily progress and keeps a track of his records and consequences. If you want to make any change in their daily schedule, inform the children beforehand. Children prefer consistency, and an abrupt change in their fixed routine can make the transition to a new routine tough for them.

Involvement of Teachers

It is crucial that you involve your child's teachers in this kind of behavior therapy. Children spend a majority of their waking hours at school, so make sure his teachers understand the importance of following this technique. Exchange notes with his teacher so you can track his behavior at school. Parents and teachers must work closely together (and even take help from a behavioral counselor) to learn the skills required to handle ADHD children in school. The behavioral therapy techniques followed at school must be the same as those followed at home. It will thus be easier for the child to respond to the disciplinary actions and for the caregivers to keep track of the child's progress.

Helping an ADHD-affected Child to Interact Socially

Children diagnosed with ADHD can find it extremely difficult to get along with their peers. Teach your child social skills which will help him make new friends. Get to know the kids he is more likely to spend time with, and organize play-dates. Keep a watch on your child, without interfering a lot, so you know how your kid is behaving with others of his age. You may find that he does not share his toys readily or seems to be in a hurry and does not wait for his turn. Act accordingly and explain to your child what sort of behavior is acceptable in public. Give gentle reminders the next time he is out with other people. Kids with ADHD do better in sports that do not require team play, so enroll them in karate, swimming or gymnastics. Get to know children who share similar interests with your child, and try to foster friendship with them.

Additional Home Remedies

Some other changes you can make are - cutting down on processed foods and providing home-cooked meals which include lots of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which are undoubtedly more nutritious. Keep bedtime regular by not letting the child watch TV late into the night. Instead read stories together, which will also inculcate a love for reading. A good night's sleep is crucial to have a relaxed, more focused brain the next day.

Disciplining children with ADHD involves good communication skills. Getting tuned in to your child's needs, setting clear expectations to get things done and rewarding his accomplishments will go a long way in helping you as a family cope with this disorder. Disciplinary techniques involving behavior therapy for ADHD are gaining wide acceptance nowadays. It has been observed that using disciplinary methods to curb ADHD can effectively bring down the dependence on medications used, which is good news for both parents and children. Used without drugs, they may take much longer to show positive results, but in the end, without any harmful side effects, you will have a happier and a more confident child.

Stomach Ulcer Diet Restrictions

In stomach ulcer, the tissues lining the stomach and adjacent parts become ulcerated and inflamed, resulting in open sores that may be as large as inch. Monitoring the daily diet plan is the main approach while treating stomach ulcers. This is because certain food items initiate the onset of stomach ulcer symptoms. Hence, understanding stomach ulcer and diet restrictions along with other triggering factors is crucial for managing the discomfort.

Diet Treatment

Also referred to as a peptic ulcer or gastric ulcer, the most significant symptom of stomach ulcer is burning pain in the abdomen. Ulceration of the stomach is not only attributed to diet, but the prime causal factors include bacterial infection (Helicobacter pylori) and medicine side effects. However, pain associated with stomach ulcer is worsened when the ulcerated area comes in contact with stomach acid. And as some food items cause increased production of these digestive enzymes, identifying them is the first step to decide the diet restrictions.

While dealing with stomach ulcer, there are some self-care guidelines that need to be followed along with restricted diet for peptic ulcer. One should neither remain hungry for an extended period, nor indulge in overeating. Both these aspects are likely to increase stomach acid production. Healthy eating habits like chewing food properly and small meal serving at regular intervals are suggested to ensure proper food digestion and more importantly, regulate secretion of stomach juices. Also, maintain a time gap between dinner time and sleep time, preferably for three hours.

Diet Restrictions Explained

A well-planned ulcer diet is effective in reducing stomach acid secretion, thus alleviating stomach ulcer symptoms. For people who have been recently diagnosed with gastric ulcer, planning stomach ulcer diet menu may sound challenging. While the triggering food items differ slightly from one person to another, there are some foods that are likely to worsen gastric irritation in every individual. For your understanding about stomach ulcer diet (foods to avoid), refer to the following points.
  • While some stomach ulcer patients cannot tolerate sugary and greasy foods, others report onset of symptoms after taking spicy foods. So, the point is to eliminate both greasy and spicy foods in the gastric ulcer diet as far as possible.
  • You will come across acidic foods in the list of diet restrictions for stomach ulcers. Examples include tomato, lime, lemon, orange and all citrus fruits. The sharp taste of these fruits is imparted by the rich citric acid content, which in turn increases stomach irritation.
  • Drinks that are infused with soda, or simply carbonated liquids are not good for ulcer patients. The pH of plain soda water falls between pH 3-4. So, you can expect the consequences of having carbonated beverages in ulcerated lining of stomach.
  • Coffee and other caffeinated drinks are a strict 'no' for people with stomach ulcer. Remember that caffeine encourages further erosion of stomach lining. Even if the label says decaffeinated coffee, its best to avoid it.
  • Say not to drinks and beverages that contain alcohol. They have the same stimulating effects as caffeinated drinks. So, in order to keep gastric irritation under control, eliminate alcohol and substitute it with healthy drinks.
Coming to stomach ulcer diet recipes, the options are numerous. From the therapeutic point of view, using food ingredients that mask stomach acid, yet non-irritating to the stomach lining should be used in cooking. Some of the food items that serve as acid neutralizer include milk and dairy products, fiber containing fruits and vegetables, and food items having flavonoids in large amounts. Also, consuming foods rich in protein and vitamin aids in quick healing of ulcer.

Along with changes in the diet plan and eating habits, make sure to drink ample water and stay away from smoking. For worsening ulcer symptoms, do not delay a medical consultation. The doctor will run certain medical tests to examine the severity of stomach ulceration and rule out other diseases (stomach cancer). For stomach ulcer treatment, the doctor may also prescribe antibiotics and medications that reduce or block stomach acid secretion. In addition, it's necessary that you follow the prescribed healthy diet for ulcer to accelerate the healing process.

Herbal Remedies for ADHD

Attention deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a disorder seen in children and persists until adulthood. As the name suggests, it has two primary conditions viz. inattention and hyperactivity. The signs and symptoms are seen in children from their infancy. It is caused by failure in coordination of the reticular activating system. The reticular activating system helps co-ordinate the activating system of the human body. Let us discuss some major symptoms of ADHD and then look at the herbal supplements for anxiety, as anxiety is one of its major symptoms.

Symptoms
  • The child pays less attention to the work allotted to him in school or in some other activity.
  • He does not listen to parents and teachers.
  • The child faces difficulty in following the instructions given by teachers and parents.
  • The child easily gets abstracted and diverted from the work he is doing. Often he tends to forget things.
  • He/she talks continuously and is restless all the time.
  • Usually, in ADHD, girls are inattentive and boys are hyperactive.
Natural Remedies to Treat ADHD

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo Biloba is one of the smart drugs used to cure ADHD effectively by optimizing the brain functions. It is commonly recommended by doctors to improve the intellectual capacity of the brain. Ginkgo helps dilate the blood vessels and increases blood circulation in the body. It helps in functioning of neurotransmitters and improve the neural cell metabolism.

How Much Potassium is in a Banana

A banana is not just an average tropical fruit, but there are many health benefits attached to it. Bananas are easy to peel, non-messy, sweet, and delectable fruits, that easily form a part of an average diet. You can even carry them around in lunch boxes as a filling snack, and earn some brownie points on health.

An average banana contains two times more carbohydrates, as compared to an apple. It is rich in vitamin A, iron, phosphorus, as well as natural sugars. Apart from nutritional facts, bananas fall under the category of 'potassium rich food'. Potassium is vital for delivering oxygen to the brain and other parts of the body through the circulatory system. Banana health benefits also include regulation of blood pressure, heartbeat and maintenance of water balance in the body. A person suffering from low potassium level in the blood should consume more bananas, as they will make up for the deficiency of potassium.

Potassium Content in a Banana
There are myths, that the consumption of one or more than one banana in a day, can result in exceedingly high potassium levels. However, this is untrue. A single banana contains about 400mg of potassium. This is just about 10 to 20% of the daily requirement of potassium by the human body. Thus, in no way can a banana cause an overdose of potassium level in the blood.

Potassium mEq in a Banana
Milliequivalent is defined as "the amount, in milligram, of a solute equal to 1/1000 of its gram equivalent weight." As the amount of substance in equivalents has a very small magnitude, it is often represented in milliequivalents (mEq), wherein milli stands for a measure divided by 1000. Mostly, the evaluation is done in terms of milliequivalents of solute per liter of solvent (or milliNormal, where mEq/L = mN). As an example, this is done especially while measuring the amount of potassium (in fluids); say in blood, its levels lie in the range of 3.5 to 5.0 mEq/l. As for an average-sized banana, the amount of potassium found equals 11.6 mEq.

Potassium in a Banana Peel
A banana peel is loaded with potassium, and can be added to compost as a fertilizer. Also, you can rub a fresh peel of banana, the yellow side out, around your eyes. This will help reduce eye wrinkles, worry lines and eye bags. You can even rub these banana peels on insect bites to reduce the swelling and itching. These peels contain about 40% of the total potassium (in mg) in an average banana.

As we know, potatoes contain more potassium than bananas. However, a banana also contains vitamin B6, vitamin C, and has a high fiber content. They also contain tryptophan, which relaxes the mind and makes you feel happy. The high fiber content helps in restoring normal bowel movements, and the potassium level boosts brain power. Bananas are an excellent fruit to be eaten with plain yogurt or honey. It serves as a cure for hangovers. Eating a banana daily, will sooth ulcers and make up for an iron deficiency.
