Potassium Bromide

Potassium Bromide is used as an antiepileptic medication for canines and felines. It is a white crystalline powder to look at and is soluble in water. When diluted, potassium bromide tastes sweet, but in a highly concentrated solution, it tastes bitter! Due to the potassium ion, sodium bromide tastes salty literally at all concentration levels. If consumed, and in a high concentration, potassium bromide aggravates the gastric mucous membrane. This brings on a feeling of nausea; however, this effect is observed in all soluble potassium salts and is not only recorded for the consumption of this drug. Potassium bromide serves as a source of bromide ions. This helps in the manufacture of photographic film, which is treated with silver bromide. A solution of Potassium bromide is observed to form complexes when reacted with some metal halides. The chemical symbol for Potassium Bromide is KBr.

Medical and Veterinary Uses

The anticonvulsant properties of potassium bromide are most exploited by the medical and veterinary fraternities. In fact, it is interesting to note that Bromide is regarded as the first effective medication for epilepsy! Potassium bromide is also used to treat the condition of clinically proven epilepsy in dogs. It is used either as a first-line or additional treatment when phenobarbital does not adequately control the seizures. In case of felines, its veterinary use is limited because it is observed to cause lung inflammation.

For Human Consumption

Potassium bromide is not an FDA approved drug, to control seizures in humans. However, in some places it is used as an antiepileptic drug, particularly for the treatment of children and adolescents displaying severe forms of generalized tonic-clonic seizures. Potassium Bromide is also used for the treatment of early-childhood-related Grand-Mal-seizures and severe myoclonic seizures. The use of the drug is continued in the case of adults who have reacted positively to the drug during childhood. Potassium bromide displays complete bio-availability. Usually, a single tablet contains 850 mg of this drug. The drug does not interfere with the absorption or excretion of any other anticonvulsant that may be in use.

Possible Side Effects

The therapeutic index is very small for bromide since it gives rise to intoxication. The side-effects of potassium bromide include loss of appetite, nausea, lethargy, depression, loss of concentration, headache, pathologic reflexes, loss of neural sensitivity, abnormal speech and aggressiveness. The use of potassium bromide is also connected with the development of acne-form dermatitis and mucous hypersecretion in the lungs, worsening asthma and rhinitis. Cases on record, minimal though, also claim tongue disorder, bad breath and obstipation.

Dosage

Potassium bromide is available in liquid and capsule form. The liquid form is flavored. When on this drug, you don't have to stick to a strict 12 hour schedule. Twice a day dosage is recommended because some people and animals are not able to tolerate too much salt in the gastrointestinal tract at once. If you miss a dose, make it up over the next week. The effectiveness of this drug should not be evaluated until the patient takes the drug for at least three or four months.

For Animals

The absorption, distribution and speed of metabolism can vary among dogs and in the case of canines, there is always a published dose recommended as a general guide. An average dose is 20 mg to 30 mg per kg of body weight, given once a day. The veterinarian adjusts the dosage based on blood levels and the extent of seizure activity. To determine the correct dose, it is good to monitor its level in the blood. Any change should be made on the basis of the actual concentration in the blood. The vet is expected to collect a single sample within a week of the loading dose to check the therapeutic levels.

Flower Remedies for Anxiety

Flower remedies were invented by Edward Bach, an English homeopath and physician. The other name given to flower remedies is flower essence therapy. Flower remedies are actually dilutions of dew found on flower petals. According to Bach, the dew is able to retain the healing properties of the plant. These are also made by soaking flowers in pure water in sunlight. This helps in extracting essence from the flower. The liquid solvent used to make the remedies is a solution of brandy and water in the proportion 8:7. These remedies do not have the scent or taste of the plant, because it is in extremely diluted form. Flower remedies prove to be especially beneficial in treating depression related problems, anxiety, stress and insomnia. Flower remedies are made using flower extracts. Some of the Bach flower remedies can constitute only single essence or can also be a combination of different essences.

Flower Remedies for Anxiety

Aspen
If a person constantly worries about the unknown for no apparent reason, aspen flower essence is used for treatment. Many a time the person will fear about the same thing all the time and often will find it difficult to open up and let others know about the fear.

White Chestnut
People who suffer from repetitive thoughts and find it difficult to drive away those thoughts benefit from the use of white chestnut. In some cases, the thoughts may go away for sometime, but only to return. The thoughts eventually become a mental torture. White chestnut helps in treating people with such torment, and is also used to treat compulsive disorders.

Rock Rose
One of the natural remedies for anxiety is the use of rock rose. It is especially beneficial when there appears to be no hope for the person. People who have suffered an accident or illness or are petrified for some reason seem to benefit a great deal with the use of this remedy.

Each of them have their own healing properties. It is best used when there is no time to really consider the right remedy for the condition, especially in case of an emergency.

How to Use Flower Remedies

There are different ways in which the flower remedies can be used. The most common method is to place a couple of drops of the essence under the tongue. The right quantity to be taken depends on the severity of the condition and the different symptoms displayed. The other alternative is to combine the essence with about half a glass of water. Continue to sip the water in small sips all through the day. This is often the method adopted when the remedies have to be given to children. These days the remedies are also available in cream, gel and pastilles form. If you do not really prefer the alcoholic remedies, there are non-alcoholic ones available as well.

It is advisable to consult a flower remedy specialist before using flower remedies for anxiety. The remedies may have to be altered slightly depending on the symptoms and the conditions displayed. The constitution and personality of the person are also taken into consideration while deciding the right remedy.

How Much Potassium Do You Need Per Day

The macronutrient potassium is very important for the various cellular functions within the body. There are many foods that contain potassium and one can get the recommended daily allowance of potassium from their diet. But, how much potassium do you need per day? Once you know the answer, it will be easier for you to measure your recommended potassium intake. Let us go into the details of daily potassium requirements in the information given below.

Recommended Daily Allowance of Potassium

There are many people who are diet conscious or are suffering from the consequences of low potassium diet. These people often wonder how much potassium is needed per day? Studies have found that people in the Western world often suffer from low potassium levels in the body as they do not eat healthy. They do not eat meals that help suffice their daily potassium requirements. The following paragraphs will contain information related to the recommended potassium intake.

The recommended potassium requirements for children are as follows:
  • Newborn baby to 6 months of age: 500 mg (13 mEq)
  • 7 to 12 months of age: 700 mg (18 mEq)
  • 1 to 2 years of age: 1,000 mg (26 mEq)
  • 2 to 5 years of age: 1,400 mg (mEq)
  • 6 to 9 years of age: 1,600 mg (41 mEq)
  • Children over 10 years of age: 2,000 mg (51 mEq)
When it comes to potassium requirements for women, it is about 2,300 to 4,700 mg/day. Pregnant women need up to 4,700 to 5,100 mg/day, as they tend to pass on the potassium to their babies in womb and while breast-feeding. When it comes to recommended daily allowance of potassium for men, they need about 3,300 to 4,700 mg/day. The recommended potassium requirement for athletes is more as they exercise harder. The loss of potassium from the body is greater due to excessive sweating after a hard workout. Hence, they need more than 4,000 mg/day of potassium in their daily diet. So, the verdict is, an adolescent as well as an adult requires at least 4,700 mg of potassium in their daily diet.

Why do We Need Potassium in Our Daily Diet?

I am sure you must be wondering, why do we need at least 4,700 mg of potassium per day in our diet. This is because potassium is a macronutrient just like calcium, sodium, magnesium, chloride, sulfur and phosphorous. Potassium breaks down into ions when dissolved in water and helps conduct electrical impulses within the body. These potassium ions are present within a cell and outside the cell walls. Sodium too, is present within and outside the cell wall. The only difference is that there is more of potassium within the cell wall and more of sodium ions outside the cell wall. This causes an electrochemical gradient called the membrane potential. This difference helps in transmission of sodium ions into the cell wall and potassium ions outside the cell wall. This allows nerve impulse transmission that helps in skeletal and smooth muscle contraction, heart function, digestive function and other muscular functions. Thus, if there is potassium deficiency within the body, it will lead to many nerve impulse and neurological problems. Low potassium in diet leads to hypokalemia that results in weakness, lack of energy, muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, abnormal heart function and other life-threatening conditions. This deficiency occurs after eating a high salt diet. High sodium levels in the body increases the need for more potassium to maintain the electrolyte balance. Thus, the body's requirement of potassium increases, leading to a deficiency of this macronutrient.

Is there a Need for a Low Potassium Diet?

Just as one can suffer from hypokalemia, one can also develop hyperkalemia (too much potassium in body). Kidneys tend to regulate the potassium in the body and get rid of the excess by flushing it out in the urine. However, in case of hyperkalemia, too much potassium is present in the body. This is not a good sign as it can lead to many dangerous heart ailments that can be life-threatening. Potassium toxicity is a risky condition and thus calls for a low potassium diet.

One needs to maintain a balance of potassium levels in their body or else it could lead to health complications. People tend to get just about 2,600 mg of potassium through their daily diet. This is obviously not enough and one needs to include more of potassium rich foods in their diet. Hope the above information has helped you answer your question on daily potassium requirements clearly.

Anxiety Attacks at Night

Prevalence of anxiety attacks at night is very common. Research figures show that almost 50% of all anxiety patients suffer from nighttime anxiety attacks. Ideally, a person should not suffer from this while sleeping as he is most relaxed, when he or she is in that state. Then, what could be the reason behind their occurrence? Let's find out by looking at the causes...

Causes
Nighttime panic attacks or anxiety attacks cause severe stress to a person, as he is not able to sleep properly and thus, remains disturbed even during the day. They occur due to a variety of reasons, the most common ones amongst these are listed below...

Chemical Imbalance
The brain releases a substance called serotonin, which makes the body calm and relaxed. If the brain does not provide the body with adequate amount of serotonin, the body suffers chemical imbalance which is experienced in the form of anxiety and panic attacks at night.

Panic-stricken Thoughts
While lying on the bed at night, the person might recall the happenings and events that have taken place during the day. If the day has been stressful, the person might experience panic, while thinking about it. Thus, resulting in anxiety attacks.

Sleep Disorders
Sleep apnea is a sleep disorder, which affects the rate of heartbeat and the blood pressure. The patient suffering from sleep apnea is woken from sleep, a number of times, during the night. These numerous arousals caused by sleep apnea, can sometimes trigger anxiety attacks. Another sleep disorder, namely pavor nocturnus, can trigger these attacks too.

Improper Consumption
Tea, coffee, alcohol and drugs, if consumed by an anxiety patient can trigger an attack in the night. Certain foods, like sugar and wheat, might cause an attack in an occasional patient.

Symptoms
Even, a normal person can experience some of these symptoms, when going through a stressful phase in life; however, a person suffering from anxiety will experience these symptoms continuously, day after day. Here are the symptoms, a person experiences at night.
  • Accelerated heartbeat and palpitations
  • Excessive sweating
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Trembling or shaking
  • Numbness
  • Dizziness or giddiness
  • Nausea
  • Extreme hot and cold sensations
  • Muscle pain and fatigue
Prevention
Now that we know the causes and symptoms of nightly anxiety attacks, let's learn how to prevent them. Firstly, you need to take a shower with lukewarm water, before going to bed. This helps in easing the muscle tension and thus, relaxes the body. Secondly, instead of thinking about the day's events at bedtime, meditate for a few minutes. Practice visualization and think about nature or the things that make you happy or relaxed. If meditation techniques for anxiety are not your cup of tea, read a book or play with your children. Basically, involve yourself in an activity, which takes your mind away from panic-stricken thoughts. This is a proven anxiety cure. Lastly, refrain from caffeine and intoxicants, such as alcohol and drugs. If certain foods are triggering an anxiety attack in you, keep a record of it and don't consume them before sleeping.

Treatment
For treating panic attacks, cognitive behavioral therapy is recommended. CBT is a systematic approach to solve problems related to dysfunctional emotions and behavior. Take psychotherapy sessions from a psychiatrist and try to find out the reasons as to why you're experiencing anxiety and panic attacks. Once, you are able to ascertain the reasons for your panic, treating them will become easier. Ask the therapist to recommend some mind exercises, to minimize these attacks. You may also consult a physician and ask him to recommend antianxiety drugs and antidepressants, which help in reducing the incidence of such anxiety attacks.

Dealing with anxiety attacks can be quite easy, provided the above-mentioned tips are followed to the tee. However, if they still continue even after all precautions have been taken, the reason could be that a certain medication or treatment is not suitable for you. It is recommended that a doctor should be consulted, in such a scenario, and alternate treatments or medications should be sought.

Black Cherry Juice for Gout

Gout is a form of arthritis that mostly affects the big toe. However, chronic form of gout may also affect other body joints such as the knee, elbow, wrist, etc. Like any other form of arthritis, gout is characterized by joint pain and inflammation. The difference is that the gout pain and inflammation are not triggered by degeneration of the joint but because of deposits of uric acid crystals in these areas. The medicines that are used for gout treatment cannot be used for a long time because of their side effects. For this reason, gout patients often look for safer ways to treat the condition. Black cherry juice is a natural treatment option for them and it can be used without the fear of any side effects.

Benefits
Gout occurs when uric acid level in the body becomes high. Actually, uric acid is a water soluble waste product, which is formed when the nitrogen compound (purine) found in protein rich foods are broken down in the body. Then, it is excreted out through the kidneys. When its level is high, then some uric acid residues are left behind in the body and cannot be expelled completely. The residues of uric acid then form crystals and get deposited in the body joints. These uric acid crystals irritate the surrounding tissues in the area and cause gout pain. Therefore, gout is one such form of arthritis where just treating the pain and inflammation is not enough, but the level of uric acid in the blood has to be brought down.

Use of cherry juice for gout is a traditional method of treatment. Among all varieties of cherry, black cherry is the most preferred one mainly because it is very nutritious. There are several benefits of using black cherry juice for treating gout. It contains a component called anthocyanins, which is highly effective for lowering the level of uric acid in the blood by facilitating its excretion through urine. Thus, cherry juice eliminates the root cause of gout and cures the disease. Besides, it has amazing anti-inflammatory properties, which is considered as good as that of pain relieving medicines. It improves blood circulation in the area and brings down inflammation. Thus, you get relief from joint pain and tenderness caused by arthritis. Another positive effect of black cherry juice is that it protects the joint. The body joints often suffer damage under the influence of free radicals. Black cherry juice contains a high amount of antioxidants that can resist the harmful effects of free radicals and thus, keep the joints healthy.

Dosage
The black cherry juice purchased from local health food stores is found in concentrated form. You require only small doses to obtain the desired results. Just two tablespoons of black cherry juice twice a day is enough for treatment of gout symptoms. When you have a severe gout attack, then you can increase the dosage and have it thrice a day. You have to continuously use it as long as the gout symptoms do not subside completely. After that, many gout patients continue to take one tablespoon of black cherry juice daily to keep the gout pain away.

Now, the concentrated juice is very sweet in taste and many people cannot have it directly like any other liquid form of medicines. If you feel the same, you can dilute two tablespoons of the juice in a cup of water and drink it. Another alternative way is to mix it with plain organic yogurt and eat it. Some people prefer to have it after mixing it with fruits like banana, which also contributes towards fast elimination of uric acid.

Now, you must not think that simply taking only the required dosage of black cherry juice will give you the desired results. It should be accompanied by a proper diet that includes fruits rich in vitamin C, raw vegetables, fresh vegetable juices, complex carbohydrates, etc. Purine rich foods add up to the level of uric acid in the body. Hence, foods like red meat, poultry, shellfish and pork should be strictly avoided. Seek advice from your doctor before proceeding with any kind of diet. Eat healthy and stay healthy!

How to Control Anxiety

When someone suffers from an anxiety disorder, most of the time is spent worrying and panicking, that too over issues that are yet to take place. The morning starts with worry, and worry doesn't end till night. The sleep is disturbed, and you are not at peace even when you are awake! Lack of proper sleep leads to lack of energy to face the day, which is also accompanied by irritation, muscle tension, headache, chest pain, and lack of attention. You need not worry about your anxiety and stress levels, if you are not facing the symptoms mentioned above. But if you have been experiencing the problems mentioned above, then you need to take effective steps to control anxiety without any further delay.

Effective Ways to Keep Anxiety Under Control

Our mind reacts to what we perceive and so does our body! Our body consists of a defense mechanism to fight against the threats that our mind perceives. When we sense these threats coming towards us, the body automatically releases hormones to prepare it for taking a physical action. These hormones accelerate the nervous system. Therefore, anxiety to some extent is normal, just like getting angry or tired. But anything more than required, can create problems in our life and also in the life of those with whom we live! When one suffers from anxiety disorder, false alarms are given to the mind and body, due to which we tend to over react. This results in increased heart palpitation, sweaty palms, muscle tension, headaches, and what not! If the matter is left unattended, this can invite many severe health problems, hence it is very very important to learn how to control anxiety attacks at the earliest stage itself! The following are some ways on how you can keep your anxiety and anger under control.

Natural Ways to Control Anxiety

Most of us don't even realize that our reaction to a situation is way more than what is required! Consulting a doctor isn't always the first preference, is it? Here are some techniques on how to control anxiety without medication.
  • Breathing Exercises: Breathing exercises are very effective and beneficial in controlling anxiety naturally. Performing breathing exercises as soon as you get up in the morning helps a lot. Even during the day, if you feel that you are about to have a panic attack, start breathing slowly and deeply. One of the most effective exercise is to stand up straight and dropping your shoulders and start taking deep breath, all the way down till your stomach squeezes in, hold your breath for a second or two, and then fully release the breath out, emptying your lungs completely! Repeat this exercise whenever required and notice the difference. Holding your breath before exhaling, calms and relaxes your mind. Practice more of it and you will find that you are taking control of your anxiety gradually.
  • Flowers Do Empower: Another cure among the many natural anxiety cures is the effect of flowers. Bach flower remedies are also very useful for curing anxiety. Among the many flowers used by Dr. Bach, the use of white chestnuts is significant for controlling anxiety. It's essence makes a person's mind relaxed and calm. The unwanted and unnecessary thoughts are controlled and the mind gets more balanced and controlled energy in dealing with problems.
  • Relaxing Activities: Certain relaxing exercises and activities can also help a person in controlling anxiety. Activities like yoga meditation, getting a massage done to loosen up your muscles, Aromatherapy, Acupressure, listening to some soothing and relaxing music, reading self-help or mind relaxing books includes among the most effective relaxation techniques for anxiety.
  • Avoid Alcohol, Drugs, and Caffeine: When a person is suffering from anxiety disorders, consumption of these elements can have a negative effect on the situation. For example, caffeine can stimulate the already triggered nervous system and worsen the matter. So try to avoid or minimize the consumption of these things. Also avoid medicines that constitute of decongestants.
  • Have Plenty of Sleep: Sleep is a natural way of relaxing our body and mind from the physical and mental tension that comes across in the day. Inadequate sleep makes the body and mind tensed. So no matter if your day was full of worries and anxiety, try to relax your mind before you sleep with the help of some relaxation techniques for anxiety mentioned above, or doing anything that relaxes your mind.
  • Focus on the Present: This would not be easy when you start, but with constant efforts, you will get the hang of it. Don't start worrying about things which have not taken place. Instead learn to focus on things which are there in the present. The Bible quotes the following words, "Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own."
  • Look at the Brighter Side: People suffering from anxiety disorders tend to focus more on the negative than on the positive. Every cloud has a silver lining, so change your mindset and focus that the bright side is just across the worry.
  • Question Yourself: Wherever your mind takes you, asking yourself some questions at that point of time, will certainly help you get the answers. Ask yourself questions like, " Do I have any strong evidence to support my thinking? Am I helping myself by thinking this way or just getting more miserable? Do others think the same way as me? What can I do to help myself?" At times questioning yourself and answering the questions by yourself makes you realize what others cannot! Try this technique and see if it works for you.
Controlling Anxiety at Work

Controlling anxiety at workplace is a little difficult. This is so because at our respective workplaces, we need to maintain a certain decorum and certain etiquette. I mean you can't start doing yoga exercises to calm down your anxiety, when your boss asks you to do a presentation!! Apart from the exercises and techniques mentioned above, here are some additional tips to overcome anxiety:
  • Keep Your Work Desk Clean and Tidy: How does this help overcome anxiety? Well, let's say for example, you get a panic attack at work, many times it is because your boss has asked for a file, or a report, or some presentation that needs to be done right away, what I mean to say is that it will be work related! Now judge yourself, if a clean work space will help you control anxiety or what effect will a messy and chaotic work place have wen all you are worried about is, getting things right!
  • Take Mini Breaks: Taking mini breaks at work place allows you to take a deep breath from the busy and stressful schedule. This definitely helps in controlling anxiety and also calms your mind to work productively.
  • Pray: If you are religious, then not only at your work place, but also otherwise, start praying. I can't help but quote a verse from the Bible,Philippians 4:6 says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." A little 2 minute prayer can help you overcome anxiety. Give your worries to the Lord and he will take care of it all. :)
  • Don't Do Anything That You Think Is Unmanageable: I do understand that work demands to accept challenges. But then, if you think that there is something you will not be able to manage, don't go for it until you are mentally prepared.
  • Target your Goal: Once you are there at your work place, your growth depends on how you perform and not what you are going through. Therefore, target your goals. Once you are clear about your goals, you will also be clear about the responsibilities you would want to take. This would prepare your mind and hence, anxiety will be there, but you will be able to handle it!
  • Practice At Home: One of the ways to relief stress and anxiety is to practice work related activities at home. For example, if you have been asked to give a presentation, practice at home, imagining the members sitting in front of you while you are presenting the presentation. Or if you have been asked to give a speech, then practice in front of the mirror. This will make your mind and body prepared to face the situation and help control your anxiety when you actually face it.
  • Talk to a Friend: Talking to a friend or a confidante can prove to be of help. At times sharing how you feel and seeking others opinion on the matter helps reduce anxiety.
Anxiety can be stressful and critical, but if proper action is taken on time, it is absolutely curable. If your level of anxiety can't be cured by taking the above mentioned steps, then it is advisable to seek a doctor's assistance as soon as possible. Anxiety medication has its own pros and cons, and only a doctor will be able to guide you correctly. All the best!
